Due to begin in the first half of April 2020, the Hurstmere Road Transformation project is set to revitalise Takapuna, creating a vibrant, people-friendly retail destination.
The new designs will deliver a safer, more spacious and attractive streetscape for pedestrians, visitors and shoppers alike.
North Shore Councillor Chris Darby says the new pedestrian-friendly design will enliven Takapuna.
“The improvements build on the success of Hurstmere Green and anticipate the proposed market square, better linking the town centre with the best urban beach I know of.”
Hurstmere Road between Anzac Street and Lake Road will become one-way for north-bound traffic. South-bound traffic will be redirected along Anzac Street and Lake Road.
Councillor Richard Hills is excited about the project and its environmental focus.
Hurstmere Road businesses will remain open throughout construction.
Works are anticipated to be completed in mid-late 2021.
Gasometer car park update
Construction remains on track for the new Gasometer car park building on Huron Street, set to open in winter this year. Boasting 420 short-stay public spaces, the new car park will feature electric car charging stations, motorbike parking, bike storage, accessibility parking and changing rooms.
New town square design update
Detailed design is now in the advanced stages for Takapuna’s new town square. It will play a significant role in the bright future of the community by providing spaces for people to meet and relax, for children to play and celebrations to be held.
The Unlock Takapuna programme recently achieved a 5 Star Green Star rating which recognises best-practice design and sustainability. The rating is one of the first to be awarded in New Zealand by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC).
